Step1. Download and install DVD to AVI Converter for Mac.

HandBrake is a free tool which comes with plenty of features for beginners and intermediate users alike. The open source software can decrypt and convert a DVD into formats that can be consumed on your Mac, PC, iPod, PSP, Apple TV, Television, iPhone, or mobile phone. Now you can follow the guide to rip your DVD movie to MKV video.
Step1. Download and install Handbrake
To get started you'll have to install the software. At the time of writing the software was up to version 0.9 and available free at the HandBrake Web site. Once installed open the HandBrake application. The application should default to a simple interface like the screenshot below.
Step 2, Insert DVD movie
Once you've selected the DVD you want to copy or back up insert it into your Mac. Now click on the icon that says "Source" and click your DVD drive.
Click Open and you will be able to see many titles included in this DVD disk. Choose the longest title if this is a movie DVD, or choose your favorite chapter if this is an episode.
Step 3, Set the output format

This step-by-step guide will show you how to use Aimersoft DVD Ripper for Mac to rip general DVD (copy-protected included) on Mac OS X (Leopard Supported) for iPod, PSP, Zune, iPhone, Apple TV, etc. It will include two parts:

If you want to capture certain part of the DVD movie, you can click "Trim" to customize the conversion time, there will be a timeline below the preview window, you can drag the little triangle icon to set the conversion start time and end time.
If you want to cut the black edges of the DVD movie, you can click the "Crop"button, and then you will see a pop up windows (See the figure below). There is a frame in dashed line around the movie video; you can drag it to cut the black edges. More over, you can specify an area by setting the crop values. If you want to join several DVD chapters into one file, on the main interface, there is a check box "Merge into one file", select it, then you will only get one output file instead of several files by chapters.
You can click the “Effect” button and customize the brightness, saturation, contrast, volume, etc (See the figure below). You can even apply special effects such as "Emboss", "Negative", "Old film" and "Gray" by selecting an effect from drop-down list.
